Computer and mobile game localization
In 2010, Zynga released a new “farm” for Facebook, the game called “CityVille”, in 5 languages. In just 12 days “CityVille” had 27 million users.
It never would have happened if Zynga hadn’t done a superb job of localization.
Internationalization is crucial if you are looking for a global market.
We go beyond words and meaning to help you obey the laws and regulations of each country you are targeting.
For example, Germany prohibits the use of any Nazi images or symbols. Some countries prohibit graphic violence and blood; in others, nude scenes or those considered immodest by local standards.
To avoid legal problems or offending the local population it is essential to modify all prohibited or undesirable scenes when the project is localized.
Occasionally, it is even necessary to localize the entire script. Typically, this happens when a game is developed without regard to future international sales.
This happened to a game called "Sniper Elite". The principal character in the original game is an American secret agent who saves the nuclear developments of the Third Reich from the Russians. This scenario drew a hostile response from the Russian gaming community. The game was localized by making the hero a Russian ally agent dressed as a German with the goal of ruining SS officers’ plans. The modification defused the anger and the game was a success in the Russian market.
